Autumn 2 - Festivals and Celebrations
This half term the children have been using the sounds and tricky words they know in their reading and writing. In phonics they have learnt all of the letters and sounds within Phase 2 and have learnt to read the six tricky words which accompany these sounds. Please continue to practise these sounds and tricky words with your child at home on a weekly basis.
The children learnt the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff and drew a picture of their favourite character. They then had a go at either labelling their picture or writing a simple sentence about their chosen character.
To prepare the children for our school trip to London Zoo we introduced them to the story of the First Christmas. They then had to draw the characters from the story in a stable and use the sounds they know to label them.
The children were very excited to hear from Santa Claus who asked them to write their Christmas present wish list on a letter addressed to him in the North Pole. They also enjoyed writing Christmas cards and labels for presents to their friend in our Santa's Workshop Role-Play area.
Whilst continuing to focus on number recognition, ordering and counting on and back the children were introduced to 2D Shapes and used mathematical language to describe their properties, i.e. corners, sides and edges. They also looked at and created their own repeating patterns using paints and fruit. Finally the children were introduced to positional language. They learnt the story of 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt' and drew their own map to help the family escape from the bear. They then described how the family got to the other side, for example "They ran through the swishy grass", "They jumped into the mud", "They skipped around the trees in the forest."
Understanding of the World and Expressive Arts and Design
This half term the children have been learning about the special festivals celebrated by different religions. At the beginning of the half term many of our children celebrated Diwali. They learnt some special stories, including the story of Rama and Sita and made Diya's, Rangoli Patterns and Coconut Ice. In December the children visited London Zoo, where they watched a 'Live Nativity'. They were lucky enough to meet the different animals and characters which appeared in the story, including Bactrian camels (camels with two humps), sheep and lambs, wise men, shepherds and Mary. Finally they got to visit Santa in his grotto and were given the opportunity to ask him lots of questions about where he lives, what the reindeers eat and how he knows where all the little boys and girls live.
Our role-play area this half term was a mix between a Post Office and Santa's Workshop. The children thoroughly enjoyed wrapping boxes, writing cards and posting letters and parcels in our class post-box. The children enjoyed decorating their classroom by making paper chains and different decorations. They made chocolate snowflakes using different ingredients and made Christmas cards by painting 'Santa's face' onto their hands.
What a busy but fun half term we've all had!!!
Have a lovely holiday and we'll see you on Thursday 5th January 2017.
