Literacy

Monday 29th June 2020

This week for literacy, your child will continue to focus on the story of The Gingerbread Man. Towards the end of the week, they will use their increasing knowledge of this traditional tale to write the story in their own words. Using their story map from last week and recapping on the main events of the story will help consolidate their understanding of the  characters, settings and main events.

Today we would like your child to design a ‘Wanted’ poster of the Gingerbread Man. Ask them what did the Gingerbread Man that was naughty? Encourage them to use adjectives to describe his appearance and explain why he is 'Wanted'. Don’t forget to add a reward for the person that finds him. See an example of a ‘Wanted’ poster below.

Ask your child to imagine that they are each of the characters on the cards below. Ask them what they think each of the characters are feeling and thinking? Encourage them to write each character’s thoughts on the thought bubble. Remember to use capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.

Challenge: Can you use an exclamation mark for any of the character’s thoughts?

Wednesday 1st July 2020

Using their story map from last week, encourage your child to focus on the pictures which depict the beginning events of the story. Encourage them to retell the events using story language. Encourage your child to write the events that happened at the beginning of the story on the template below. We have added some pictures from the story to help your child remember these events.

Thursday 2nd July 2020

Ask your child to read over their writing from yesterday (the beginning events of the story.) Today we would like your child to write the events that happened in the middle of the story. Once again we have added some pictures from the story to help your child remember these events.

Encourage them to write about another animal that the Gingerbread Man came across after the cow and the horse. They can draw a picture in the blank box to depict this event.

Friday 3rd July 2020

Ask your child to read over their writing from yesterday (the middle events of the story.) For the final part of their literacy task this week  we would like your child to write the events that happened at the end of the story. Once again we have added some pictures from the story to help your child remember these events.

Challenge: Read your version of The Gingerbread Man story from the beginning to the end to a member of your family.
