Literacy/ Communication and Language

As well as the learning for each day please also encourage your child to practise writing their name everyday using a range or mark making tools - pencils, felt tips, pens, crayons, paints, chalks. They also need to try to use a tripod grip (two fingers and thumb) when writing. If your child can write their first name they can practice their surname. If they can write both please practice writing all the letters of the alphabet.

Tripod Grip

Monday 6th July

Some children are returning to Nursery this week, the staff are very excited to see them. Some things may seem a little different in the Nursery so here is a little story to share with your child about what it will be like in the Nursery now. There is also a video of the Nursery staff which was sent to you via email and it is also on the Website, please have a look at it again. Even if your child is not returning you can still share the story and video with them to understand what Nursery is like now.

After reading the story you can ask your child some questions for understanding:

What will happen as we walk in the gate?

Will the Nursery look the same? How might it be different?

What special things will I have of my own?

What things do I need to remember to do?

What things am I not able to do?

Who will be in the Nursery with me?

Will all my friends be there? Why?

Below is another story for you to read to your child today as part of their leanring. You can sound out some of the smaller words for your child to orally blend together and say the words, for example  h / a  / d. Or if your child is confident with their sounds they can have a go at sounding out the smaller cvc words themselves. After you have shared the story with your child ask them the following questions for understanding:

Why was Jake upset?

What idea did his sister have to cheer him up?

Where did they go looking for Jakes Teddy?

Who did they meet?

What things did they collect on the way?

What was the red dragon doing?

What happened at the beginning/ middle/ end of the story?

Can you think of a different ending for the story?

Tuesday 7th July

Ask you child to mark make/ draw/ write about their favourite part of the story 'Treasures in the Garden'. You can remind your child of the questions you asked them yesterday and the story to try and think what they want to draw and write about. Use the following templates below to help support your child. If they are able they can use the sound mat to sound out some letters of the words and write them next to their marks/drawings.

It is important each time your child completes a writing activity from Nursery they are encouraged to try and use a tripod grip (two fingers and thumb) to hold their pencils/crayons and also always practise writing their name on each piece of their work. Also to always talk about what their marks/pictures are. The more they practice the better.

Wednesday 8th July

Today is the Uxendon Manor School Virtual Sports Day. Please see details of activities for your child on the letter emailed to you from the school.

Thursday 9th July

Look through some of the photos below with your child of this year at Nursery from September 2019 until March 2020. Talk to your child about their year at Nursery asking the questions below:

What have you like learning at Nursery this year?

Is there anything you did not like learning?

What was your favourite thing to play with at Nursery?

Who did you like playing with in the Nursery?

What do you know now that you did not before?

What learning have you done this year in Nursery? This could be in Nursery or at home learning too.
