REAL project home visits to help with home learning
Making it REAL (Raising Early Achievement in Literacy) is an award winning programme for practitioners and parents to support children's early literacy and development in the home environment.
The project builds parents knowledge and confidence so that they can help their children with early reading and writing skills and create a positive early home learning environment. It was developed originally by Sheffield University using the framework: opportunities, recognition, interaction and model.
At Uxendon Manor Primary, we have been running the project with targeted families requiring additional support in Nursery and Reception since 2016. Two members of staff do a series of home visits after school and 3 further sessions in school with each family.
Impact:
Over the past 6 years 43/52 children who were not meeting age related standards at beginning of year in September were age related by end of year. Parent feedback also shows how parents felt more confident in helping their children at home and how their children had grown in confidence after completing the programme.
We are immensely proud of our parents and children who have taken part in this project over the past 6 years and worked hard with the staff to ensure the best outcomes for all the children at our school.
