Wonderful World of Animals
Knowledge organiser
Communication and Language
Children will learn :
- Facts about different pets and new vocabulary such as: domestic, caged, feathered, endangered, cold-blooded, furred, scaly, warm-blooded,webbed, mammal, reptile.
- Similarities and differences between farm animals. They will find out facts about animals from non-fiction books and will also write facts about animals.
- To describe the features and naming facts about different types of wild animals and their habitats and learning new words such as: habitat, forest, jungle, predator, savanna, safari, dessert, reptiles, amphibians.
- Names and features about dinosaurs and minibeasts and words such as: armour plated ,extinct , horn, crests, spikes, frills, prickly, claws, pests, ants, centipedes, fleas, beetles, millipede.
- To tell a story and re-tell stories like "The Little Red Hen", "Dear Zoo" and Non-Fiction books.
- Say the key events in a story in order and make up their own version of the story.
- Songs about animals
Personal Social and Emotional Development
Children will learn to:
- Know that we are all good at different things.
- Stay motivated when doing something challenging.
- Keep trying and not give up when it is difficult.
- Understand that if they keep trying they can reach my goal.
Understand the link between what they are learning now and the jobs they might like to do when they are older.
Play a game cooperatively and take turns.
Physical Development
Children will learn to:
- Throw a ball into different targets, such as hoop and bucket.
Move around outdoors imitating how different animals move.
Manipulate and move objects as an individual and as part of a large group.
Hold a pencil effectively when writing letters.
Use a skipping rope.
Control hoops in a variety of ways such as: rolling, spinning, rotating, throwing and catching.
Literacy
Key texts:
Non-fiction books about pets, farm animals, wild animals, dinosaurs, minibeasts, The Little Red Hen, Dear Zoo.
Children will learn to:
- Hear initial, middle and final sounds in words.
- Write facts about pets, farm animals, wild animals, dinosaurs and minibeasts.
Write their own version of the Dear Zoo story.
- Tell and re-tell known and familiar stories
- Listen to a wide range of stories and poems and rhymes.
- Use the tricky words learnt so far in their writing and begin to use the digraphs they have learnt in their writing.
- Write a story map about the key texts.
- Learn about the difference between a fiction and non-fiction book
- Understand that pages in a fact book can be read in any order
- Know the structure of an information book such as contents page, index, glossary.
Mathematics
Key texts:
Room on the Broom, I Spy Numbers, The Ugly Five, The Blue Balloon
Children will learn to :
- Make the composition of numbers up to 10.
- Measure capacity such as: how many fit inside?
- Use mathematical language such as full, empty, half full, nearly empty, nearly full.
- Compare mass - heavier and lighter than.
- Comparing height- taller and shorter than.
- Comparing length- longer and shorter than.
Understanding the World
Children will learn to:
- Talk about the similarities and differences between different animals.
- Learn the names of the different enclosures for farm animals.
- Observe and talk about the changes when making bread.
- Sort different dinosaurs according to their features.
Understand the key features of the life cycle of an animal.
Explore the natural world around them.
Understand about the Chinese New Year celebration - how this festival is celebrated and who celebrates it.
Talk about how this festival is celebrated in the same or different way to other festivals
Expressive arts and designs
Children will learn to:
- Explore, use and refine a variety of artistic effects to express their ideas and feelings.
- Design and make a pet, a farm animal , wild animal or dinosaur from different materials.
- Choose and use range of resources to create a habitat.
